Want to increase your online visibility and attract visitors to your website? Or do you want some answers on the long-term benefits of blogging and how it helps with SEO?

You’re in the right place.Get comfortable, and I’ll explain simply before you can finish your coffee.

Let’s start with how SEO works. Search engines use programs called crawlers to search or ‘crawl’ all the content within a website. Crawlers look specifically for keywords placed in certain locations within the copy to help them learn what the site is about and store the information. Having relevant keywords in the correct place is essential; this allows the search engine to show the right results to users.

Still with me? Good, hang in there.

SEO is often considered a complex subject, but in reality, it’s quite simple. It’s executing it well that’s a little more tricky. Nurturing a website with solid SEO takes time and patience, but there are things you can do to boost your progress. This is where blogging comes in.

Why is blogging so good for business?

Websites that gather digital dust in the furthest corners of the internet do not attract the attention of the web gods, such as Google. Search engines favour sites that are active and updated regularly. Writing a regular blog post is an excellent opportunity to create fresh content and give you some internet street cred. Blogs provide excellent opportunities to use keywords and links that may otherwise be difficult to place.

  • Long-tail keywords. These are search terms used when people are ready to make a purchase. They tend to have a lower search volume but precise intent, ranking them higher. Think ‘How to make the best Italian tomato pasta sauce’ rather than ‘Tomato sauce.’
  • Internal links. Internal links are great for strengthening the structure and helping the algorithm understand your site. Let’s say you sell baking equipment and you’ve written a blog about how to make a tiered wedding cake. You’d add an internal link to your website page selling cake tins.
  • External links. Think of an external link as a positive reference. They show crawlers that your site is trustworthy. An established website linking back to yours is a green flag to Google’s algorithm, suggesting that your site is active and popular.

There are other benefits, too. You can break your blog into sections to use in social media posts, use them to answer FAQs and make your site stand out from the competition. Consistency is your friend here. Regular posts that are informative and interesting will help you rank higher. It’s a long but fruitful game.
